Every day someone needs blood.
Blood cannot be produced artificially: only a person can give it.
For the Italian law the blood cannot be sold, can only be given by donors.
Blood is needed not only for the emergency, due to accidents, but to take care of serious diseases, to help people affected by cancer and to effect organ transplants too.
Even during the births and the surgical operations may be needed a blood transfusion.
The blood we collect in our Country isn’t enough.
Who is in good health and weight at least 50 kilos can give blood.
Giving blood is absolutely safe, thanking to the sterile kits used for each donor
Giving blood takes only 8-10 minutes time.
Before giving blood you need to fill a form on your health and to pass a simple medical examination.
If you are taking medicines you may be suspended from the donation for a period varying according to the type of medicine used. The same apply to vaccines, surgical operations and pregnancy.
To avoid the possibility of transmitting tropical diseases to the receiver, the donor has to be out from endemic countries from at least one year.
To safeguard the health of the receiver the Transfusion Plant needs to be able to trace the donor and to be sure of his identity, in the total guarantee of his privacy. For these reasons to give blood, if you don’t have an Italian Tax code, you have to show your Staying licence or the S.T.P. model for the temporary health assistance. All the personal data are for use of the Hospital only and cannot be shown to anyone in the respect of the anonymous giving.
On every blood donation is made a serial of analysis to check the donor health, so when you do something good for the others you have at the same time a free of charge control on your health. For blood giving and to do the relevant analysis you need to have empty stomach from at least 8 hours, you can have water, tea or coffee without sugar.
If you are employee, you have the right to have a day holiday rewarded, when you give blood.

The blood donors association A.V.I.S. is, from over fifty years, at the service of who is suffering and contribute with his members to provide the blood for the Prato Hospital needs.
